Bosch Luys Kloof is a special piece of land in the Karoo. It is family owned and has been transformed into a private nature reserve. The vision and strive is to restore it to a true nature reserve instead of an artificial commercial development.

The reserve’s attraction to guests is its unspoilt natural beauty, remoteness and tranquility.  Each building, and in particular the guest units, has wonderful views.

Zebra foals surprise guests

In mid-2010 a small group of Plains Zebra (Equus quagga) were introduced into the reserve. Soon after arriving the zebras formed family units consisting of a number of mares and an adult stallion.

Early April on an evening nature drive just after sunset, 5 adults and two unexpected foals were spotted near a watering hole. A week later we found the Zebra family again, now with 3 foals! What a great surprise!

Plains Zebras have a gestation period of 375 days and a single foal with a mass of 30-35 kg is born, usually in the summer.

Zebra & Red Hartebees

In April we introduced another small group of Plains Zebra. This decision was made after the initial group of Zebras adapted well to this environment but before we realized that a some mares would foal before the new group arrived!

A few weeks after the Zebras arrived Karoo Wild Dienste delivered a group of 16 Red Hartebees. This addition to the Red Hartebeest numbers was intended to increase the number of Red Hartebees bulls and to create a more balanced male to female ratio.

Jeanine is full of enthusiasm to advance our high standards to even greater levels!

Our first guests are full of praise!

Cape Mountain Leopards

As some of you may be aware we have been trying to photograph roaming leopards on the reserve since early 2011. We have only managed to find spoor and scats before.

In August 2011 we bought a small stud group of Nguni Cattle to put in the fenced camp on the “To Hell 'n Gone” 4x4 route up on the fynbos mountain area adjacent to The Hell (Gamkaskloof). They took some time to adapt but over the period October to February 2012 we were lucky enough to gain six beautiful new Nguni calves.

But the calves just kept on disappearing. Until by end of February we had none left! We managed to track down two carcasses but they were too old to read anything from it. And we found the clear tracks of a female leopard with a cub!

She was in the vicinity raising the cub and the beautiful Nguni calves were just too attractive to ignore. Unfortunately by the time we had our motion cameras up, the area was full of the human scent and we didn't manage to gain any photos.

The views from the mountain pass, shortly after entering the reserve, enticed the following historical remark from  Thomas Bain and Dr Atherstone in 1871:

“…A scene burst upon us I shall not forget in a hurry. Breathless I gazed down the valley on the boundless sea of blue mountains, cones and peaks, table tops and jagged lines of hillocks tingled with the faint blush of glowing rays of the unseen sun. What a wild charm thrown over the distant labyrinth of hills in the soft glow of early morn.”

This particular vista was also sketched by the known Sophia Gray in 1871.
